Help Turkey - Earthquake Relief Fund

In light of the news of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, we are privileged to have Perla, who has lived most of her life in Turkey and is currently in University here in Canada, offer her perspective and we are thankful to be able to host a cause fund that she is putting together. Please read what Perla has to say, and consider donating using the link provided at the bottom.

Hello everyone, my name is Perla Hadarean and recently there’s been a devastating earthquake that has greatly affected Turkey and Syria. Since I grew up in Turkey from the ages of 4 to 19, this country has been my home and these people are my people. Hearing about the disaster while attending university in Canada and seeing people that I know affected has made me feel helpless.

On February 6th 2023, Turkey has experienced 2 earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.6 that have occurred just 9 hours apart. Never has Turkey experienced such a disaster as a result of an earthquake.

  • 10 different counties have been destroyed with 15 million people affected by the disaster.
  • Over 10,000 people have died, and the number keeps increasing each day, 32,000 injured from over 60,000 infrastructures destroyed.
  • Rescue teams aren’t able to keep up with the disaster, with not enough help to bring people out of the wreckage and chances of survival are decreasing every minute.
  • The weather conditions are between 5 and -5 degrees Celsius, with strong wind, rain and/or snowfall.

What can you do to help?

I am uniquely positioned to fundraise for the recovery efforts, since I have family going to the sites with a few teams doing whatever they can to help. Because the country is in a financial crisis we really need outside help. Right now, the focus is on getting people the bare necessities of water, food, clothes, hygiene essentials (i.e. diapers, body wipes, soap, first aid, etc.), and shelter. Because we don’t know how the situation will progress in the weeks to come, there’s still a lot of uncertainty about where exactly money is going to be needed, but what we do know is that it will take many to be a part of the efforts. All money raised will go through Registered Canadian Charities and I will continue to update you on where the money is needed and where it gets allocated.

My heart behind this newsletter is that we can come together globally to support these people who are in dire need. A single dollar can provide someone a bottle of water and a fresh loaf of bread. This can go a long way for someone who has just lost their home.

Thanks for your consideration and support.

Fund Updates:

Perla has created a site for updates.  Please click here to keep up to date!

Early research shows that Samaritan's Purse has a remote field hospital up and running, and that the Humanitarian Coalition, a collective of 12 Canadian Charities is doing great work.  These are two agencies we will keep monitoring and will consider directing funds to.
