re·sil·ience

noun
the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

Last week, GiveWise was honoured to facilitate donations for Comunidad’s 8th annual fundraising event, which was a wonderful time of gathering together. The gathering was centered around the theme of resilience, where many stories were shared about families in Cambodia, Guatemala and even in GiveWise’s local city of Abbotsford, about how they stood through severe difficulties. The inspiring testimonies that were told highlighted remarkable innovation, entrepreneurship, strength and the support of the community.

Comunidad is a passionate group of philanthropic business owners drawn together by shared values. In partnership with Food for the Hungry, the community raises awareness and funds for families in Acul, Guatemala. This collaboration is centred around the desire to make a lasting positive impact on families who are walking amidst extreme poverty. This is tangibly executed through improving academic development opportunities, supporting vulnerable groups in recovering states of health and nutritional status, enhancing food and economic security for families to live sustainably and involving communities to lead families in improving living conditions. Comunidad’s and Food for the Hungry’s aspiration is for this community to overcome their challenges and further establish a life of sustainable thriving.

The steps a community needs to take to progress out of a life of poverty are exceptionally difficult. Barriers are put up, and limitations are inflicted upon many families worldwide. However, the stories generously shared at the Comunidad fundraiser are a powerful reminder of how generosity can serve as the next step for families to access what they need. To be resilient means to be persistent and adaptable in order to accomplish transformation. These can all be achieved even amidst the complex changes in a social-ecological system, as seen in Cambodia, Guatemala and Abbotsford. By supporting dedicated organizations such as Comunidad, who invests into families and communities that experience poverty and hardship, your generosity encourages these people to remain resilient and accomplish more than they ever thought possible.
